Building Resilience through New Symbols for Cascadia and the New Mythology – plus exercises for kids. By Willi Paul,

Resilience in social systems has the added capacity of humans to anticipate and plan for the future.

Transition Movement is working to build “resilience” in response to peak oil, climate destruction, and economic instability. They are creating community gardens to grow food and repairing old items rather than throwing them away.

Resilience symbols are a foundation for change, not quite a movement, but a movement charger.

Symbols are catalysts, transmutational and learning triggers that help us see new possibilities and worlds. We need new symbols and their messages to create new awareness for environmental justice, permaculture principles and Transition Movement values. To use the old symbols as we enter the Chaos Era is to end up artistically bankrupt and politically corrupt.

Joseph Campbell ‘s triad: journey, initiation and hero making, are symbol sourced and driven. Symbols create and illustrate mystery and risk. Symbols spark new ideas and help to create poems, graphics, stories, community sharing and new myths.

Creating new symbols can have local-to-global benefits like uniting against a common enemy or problem and sharing in a dream for the future.
